What is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, is a calculated weight based on package size rather than actual scale weight.

Why It Is Used

Carriers use volumetric weight because large lightweight cargo takes up valuable space. A bulky package may cost more to move even if it does not weigh much.

Common Formula

Volumetric Weight = Length × Width × Height × Quantity ÷ Divisor. Many air freight calculations use 6000, while courier providers may use 5000 or another divisor.

Gross Weight vs Volumetric Weight

The higher of gross weight and volumetric weight is often used as chargeable weight.
